CSFM Symposium 2023
The Center for Sustainable Future Mobility (CSFM) Symposium 2023 was hosted at ETH Zurich on June 6th. The event featured exciting presentations on three Mobility Initiative projects:
- EVAdopt: Overcoming barriers to electric vehicle adoption, presented by Dr Davide Cerruti from the Centre for Energy Policy and Economics at ETH Zurich.
- IARMO: Interactive augmented reality-guided maintenance, presented by Dr Julian Wolf from the Product Development Group at ETH Zurich.
- LROD-ADAS: Long-range obstacle detection for early alert in advanced driving assistance, presented by Dr Cornelius von Einem from the Autonomous Systems Lab at ETH Zurich.
Carlos Vivar Rios from the Swiss Data Science Center, actively involved in the CSFM Digital Twin project, presented the latest advancements in this initiative. The center has recently received additional funding from Swissuniversities, further supporting this innovatiove work.
These presentations were followed by the poster award pitches, where nine young scientists had the opportunity to summarize their work and encourage active participation in the poster session.
In the afternoon, Kristin von Szadkowski, Lighthouse & Field of Action Lead at VW, presented the bold and overarching sustainability strategy and portfolio of Volkswagen in her presentation titled Beyond Carbon-Neutral Mobility - Sustainability in the Volkswagen Group Innovation." The second keynote, Sustainable Fuels for the Future Transportation Sector, was delivered by Dr Gianluca Ambrosetti, CEO and Founder of Syntelion, who enlightened us about the challenges and opportunities in the area of solar thermal fuel generation. Dr Roland Moser, Head of Technology Office at SBB and Chairman of the European Rail Research Advisory Council, also shared insights into the important research program.
Dr Andreas Mehlhorn from Siemens Mobility joined the keynote speakers, and together with the moderator and chairman for the day, Professor Chris Onder, they engaged in a panel discussion addressing research and innovation for sustainable mobility. The discussion focused on the challenges and opportunities, collaboration between modes, and stakeholder involvement.
The Best Poster Award was granted to two young CSFM scientists: Dr Georgia Pierrou and Dr Christian Moretti. The jury, consisting of Kristin von Szadkowski, Professor em. Konstantinos Boulouchos, Dr Andreas Mehlhorn, and Dr Roland Moser, evaluated the candidates based on the novelty of their content or results, applicability/impact towards the goals of the CSFM, and the design of their posters, as well as their 3-minute pitch in plenum.
In case you were not able to attend or would like to revisit some of the presentations or posters, they are available for download below. We hope to welcome you soon again at one of our CSFM events and enjoy browsing!

Kristin von Szadkowski studied biomimetics („Bionik“) and mechanical engineering. After specializing in the field of robotics and mechatronics, she worked at the Robotics Innovation Centre (RIC), which belongs to the Bremen location of the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI GmbH), developing mobile robots. When starting at the Volkswagen Group Innovation, she also worked in the field of robotics. After a year of a sabbatical sailing, Kristin reoriented herself towards sustainability topics. She now coordinates the field of action Go.Sub-Zero in the Volkswagen Group Innovation to develop solutions for carbon negative and circular mobility.
